Treat Yourself: Tea Tree Face Mask

Confession time: I am the sad recipient of acne prone skin. I have had acne since i was about 14 and now, at almost 21, I still fight this battle. It has gotten much better this past year in that my face looks clearer, my scars are fading and there is a certain glow. It could partly be because my hormones are starting to settle out but I think it honestly is because I finally found a regime that works! I’ll do another post sometime soon on my whole regime but today I’ll be talking about a newly added product to this winning system of mine!

Meet The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Face Mask! I have only been using this product for about a month and I can see why it’s in The Body Shop’s Top Rated category! My acne nowadays tends to pop up about a week before my period (sorry not sorry for TMI) and I have THE worst habit when it comes to having acne – i like try and pop them. I am not proud of it by any stretch of the imagination!! And for those who don’t quite know why that’s a horrible practice, lemme tell you: SCARS!!! Because by popping a pimple, you technically break the skin which in turn, creates a scar once the pore dries up. I don’t mean to do it but I’ve noticed I tend to touch/pick my face when I’m stressed and I do it sometimes without even realizing I’m doing it! So in an effort to be rid of this habit, I asked my friends and family to call me out on my picking when it occurs!! Anyway, back to the mask! The mask is so easy to spread on my face and it is such a lovely, smooth texture. The scent is also very comforting due to the Tea Tree! Since I was young, I’ve always been told that Tea Tree is like the holy grail for treating acne but sadly, my mom (never having acne when she was younger) never really invested in products to help, other than Pro Active. Let’s stop here for two seconds. Before you ask, yes I have tried Pro Active, on 3 separate occasions and it did NOTHING for my face!! In fact, it made skin oilier than usually, I was perpetually shiny (not cute!!). If it works for some people, that’s great but now that I’m getting older, I’m realizing more natural skin care products are just how my skin likes it. Back to the Mask: I loved how smooth it made my face feel after washing it off!! It really helped with reducing the redness of new breakouts, mattefied my oily T-zone and my skin felt so fresh and clean!!

Don’t pick your face!!! Take my face as an example!

Looks so much better!!

Time for some side notes: I tend to have an oily T-zone and for me, at least, I did not find that the Mask made my skin any more oily. If fact, my face look incredible matte!  When you use the product, there are 2 things to keep in mind. 1) It doesn’t really dry up! Unlike typical masks, this Tea Tree Mask doesn’t dry up and harden. 2)When you have the mask on, you’ll feel some light tingling, which is normal from the Tea Tree working it’s magic. One final note – The Body Shop does have a whole line completely devoted to Tea Tree products for blemished skin! If you want to ease your way into the line, I would recommend trying this mask first!

How to use it: After washing your face and patting it dry, apply a thin layer of the mask all over your face (neck too if you want!) using your fingers. Let it do it’s thing for about 5-10 minutes and then with a sink full of clean, fresh water, splash some on your face and use a damp face towel to remove the rest. Then take a gander in the mirror and look in amazement at how fresh and matte you face looks! I recommend doing this before bed. You can also use the mask as a spot treatment instead of an all-over situation.

Treat Yourself: The Olive Branch

Shower gels – they come in a huge variety of scents, benefits and can be found anywhere from a Walmart to a specialized bath shop! But it’s finding the one that gives you everything you need/want that’s the trick part. I have experimented with Dove, Neutrogena, Nivea, Body Shop and Bath and Body Works, all have been  hit and miss but old reliable’s like the Dove Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash successes through and through. I recently try to stay awake from Bath & Body Works shower gels, the last scent I tried was the Seductive: Black Berry and Vanilla and it just made my face, chest and back just break out!!! It was so embarrassing and I’m sure it was more than likely from the fake fragrances they used. Since then I try to stay towards the more natural approaches or have been dermatologically approved. To try and reverse the effect the Bath & Body Works gel gave me, I went to Lush, seeing as though all of their products are completely natural, just to get my skin back into it’s groove. Then I found the one!

Meet Lush’s The Olive Branch Shower Gel! I could go on and on about how much I love this product but I’ll try and keep it simple! The gel itself has olive oil (the light yellow layer near the top of the bottle) and we all know how luxurious olive oil is for the skin!! The scent is light, uplifting and in a way very comforting thanks to the Mandarin juices in each bottle! Apart from the olive oil and Mandarin, the product also has vine leaves, sea salt and bergamont oil, which makes it all seem like you’re in the Mediterranean while taking a shower!! And last but not least, olive oil is like the back bone of my half Portuguese heritage, so in a way it makes me feel like I’m back in Portugal on a lovely sunny July day. Every time I use this product, my skin is noticeably softer and has the lightest hint of Mandarin scent. You will seriously feel rejuvenated after using this puppy!

Time for some side notes: Because it is all natural, you’ll be pay a pretty penny for it. It comes in 3 different sizes as you can see in the picture above and the price ranges from $9.95 – $28.95 (CND).  But in fairness, you’re paying for quality more than anything else. Sure it’s easy to pay like $5 for a Bath & Body Works gel and call it a day but when you get a reaction because of the quality of the product, you learn to think twice.

How to use it: Before hopping into your shower, you wanna give the bottle a good shake! That way the olive oil is nicely mixed with the rest of the ingredients!! Also a little does go a long way – the lather from a sample the size of a Canadian toonie will probably last you the entire shower! Finally, I learned this the last time I was in Lush picking up something for my mom, but Lush shower gels can be used as shampoos too, still haven’t tried it yet but hope to soon! So there you go, more bang for your buck!!

Treat Yourself: Beautifying Oils

I love bath products and skin care! What girl doesn’t? Taking a lovely hot bath with some candles and Michael Bublé serenading me in the back ground is how I love to relax. A few weeks ago I went out with my darling friend Jess from Clothes and Shit and we walked one of the most fashionable streets in Toronto – Queen West! Check out Jess’s post on our date here! Queen West was dubbed by Vogue Mag the 2nd hippest-district and for good reason! Tons of local boutiques, restaurants, cafés and big name clothing stores from H&M, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Joe Fresh and Aritzia, to name a few, all of which are pretty much within a 5min walk from each other. As we walked, we went into The Body Shop and from my overwhelming excitement, I started telling Jess about the different products and the shops latest scent of Fuji Green Tea. She gave me the idea of starting a blog series on bath products because she was so impressed by how much I knew! I won’t just limit the series to The Body Shop, I will branch out Lush, Dove, Crabtree and Evelyn and any other brand I can get my hands on!!

Today we are gonna be talking about The Body Shop’s Beautifying Oils. I was first caught by this product about a year ago and I had to get an explanation on it! I mean, what is beautifying oil?? It’s basically dry oil, and dry oil is a lightweight and fast absorbing treatment that will leave your skin feeling like satin (seriously!) – not grease! It’s also been recommended for all skin types for moisturizing! And there are so many benefits to making Dry Oil part of your routine! As stated by Michelle Phan’s SkinCare Spotlight dry oil can help in preventing sun damage, uneven skin tone and can be used for moisturizing your hair, face and body!!

My lovely duo!

Now for the Beautifying oils, the shop girl said you can apply it directly on your skin. So i tried it her way and to be honest, I wasn’t that crazy about it. Sometime this past winter, after a long day at clinical, I wanted to take a nice relaxing bath to soothe my body and on a whim, having not really used much of the Oils, I squirted some of the Chocomania Oil into my bath ~~ AND THUS THE BEAUTIFYING BATH WAS CREATED! When i squirted in the oil, my whole Bathroom smelled like chocolate instantly!! Before climbing into my bath, I noticed that the oils and the water had separated (which is normal), so i just gave the water a good swish around and jumped right in. With no word of a lie, in probably less that 10mins, I could already feel my skin becoming smooth! When I parted from my luxurious bath, i was moisturized from head to toe without any real effort on my part and my skin had a light hit of chocolaty smell! My skin looked illuminated and had a light, healthy sheen about it and feel supple well into the next night! The Body Shop Canada has a love selection of scents to choose from like Strawberry, Shea, Satsuma, Olive, Moringa, Coconut, and Mango to name a few. There is a scent for everyone’s taste and they can all be found here!!

Time for some side notes: I tend to have oily hair and while it says it can be used for hair, I usually keep my hair up whenever I have a Beautifying Bath. I tend to also have an oily to combination face, and I found with the Oil added to the bath, it didn’t make my face any oilier or shiny, just lightly smooth. Also, Chocomania was a Promotional scent by The Body Shop, so it’s gonna be very difficult to find it, in Canada at least, but I would recommend the Strawberry to start yourself off with. The Strawberry is a light scent for those who are sensitive to smell but it will still give you all the benefits!

How to use: Like the shopgirl said, you can apply this straight onto dry skin or hair. But if you want to have a Beautifying Bath, fill up your tub, and squirt in the oil for about 2-3 MISSISSIPPI’s and then swirl the water. The oil will eventually separate from the water as the bath goes on but not to worry, just give the water a little swirl and your skin will soak it up! If you don’t have a tub, for your shower, you can add a few drops into your bath sponge with your body wash and rub it all over!

And there you have it – our first Treat Yourself post! Give the Beautifying Bath a try and let me know what you thought! And if you have some fave bath products you think I should give a go, leave a comment of post it on out Facebook page!
